The Hidden Cost of Impulse Spending: You're Probably Not Broke — You're Leaking

You're probably not broke.

You're leaking.

There's a difference, and it's the difference between a problem you can't fix and one you can. Broke feels like a wall. Leaking is just a series of small holes you've stopped noticing — and holes can be patched.

What did the wise actually do differently?

Solomon described the pattern with an image from his own world:

The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.

Back then, food and oil were wealth. The wise stored some away. The unwise consumed everything the moment it arrived. Nothing about that has actually changed — we just do it now with one-click checkouts, tap-to-pay, and apps engineered to make spending feel like nothing happened.

Why is it so hard to feel the cost?

The little hit of buying something is real. So is the instant excuse that follows: it wasn't much, I deserved it, it was on sale.

And individually, every one of those is true. That's the trap. It's rarely one big splurge that keeps people stuck — it's the steady drip of small, unplanned ones. Each is too small to feel like a decision, so it never gets counted as one. Stack a month of them together and they quietly undo real progress.

What the leak actually costs you

The real price was never just the money that left.

It's the investment that never happened. The emergency fund still three months out of reach. The debt that hung around one month longer than it had to. Every leak is small. The bucket still empties — and what drains out isn't just cash, it's the future that cash could have built.

How to find and patch your leaks

Track everything for 30 days — no judging, just seeing.

Don't do this to feel guilty. Do it the way a doctor reads a chart: to find the pattern. You can't patch a hole you've never located.

Name your trigger moments.

Most leaks cluster — late at night, after stress, mid-scroll, payday. Once you can name the moment, you can plan for it.

Add one small friction.

Remove the saved card. Put a 24-hour rule on anything non-essential. Tiny friction breaks the reflex, and the reflex is the whole problem.

A fair note: the goal here isn't to never enjoy your money. Spending on what you genuinely value is part of a healthy financial life. The aim is simply to make spending a choice again, instead of a reflex you only notice after the fact.
